Islamic Events 2026 — Detailed Guide
1. Shab e Miraj — 26 January 2026 (27 Rajab 1447)
Shab e Miraj (Lailat ul Miraj) is the blessed night when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made the miraculous journey of Isra and Miraj — from Makkah to Jerusalem (Al-Aqsa) and then ascended through the heavens. On this journey, Allah commanded the five daily prayers (Salah) upon the Muslim Ummah. Muslims in Pakistan observe this night with special prayers, recitation of Quran and religious gatherings in mosques.
2. Shab e Barat — 13 February 2026 (15 Sha’ban 1447)
Shab e Barat (Night of Forgiveness) falls on the 15th of Sha’ban. It is believed that on this night, Allah records the deeds and fates of people for the coming year. Muslims spend the night in worship, seek forgiveness and visit graves of their loved ones. In Pakistan, mosques hold special prayers and many people fast the following day.
3. Ramadan 2026 — 18 February to 19 March 2026
Ramadan is the 9th and holiest month of the Islamic calendar — the month in which the Quran was revealed. Muslims fast from Fajr (dawn) to Maghrib (sunset) for the entire month. In Pakistan, Sehri (pre-dawn meal) is typically around 5:00–5:30 AM and Iftar (breaking fast) around 6:00–6:30 PM in February-March. Taraweeh prayers are held in mosques every night. The last 10 days are especially sacred, with Laylat ul Qadr (Night of Power) sought on the odd nights.
4. Eid ul Fitr 2026 — 20 March 2026 (1 Shawwal 1447)
Eid ul Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. Muslims celebrate with Eid prayer in the morning, pay Sadaqah al-Fitr (charity) before the prayer, wear new clothes, exchange gifts and visit family. It is a joyful celebration of completing a month of fasting and spiritual renewal.
5. Yawm ul Arafah — 28 May 2026 (9 Dhul Hijjah 1447)
The Day of Arafah is the most important day of Hajj, when pilgrims gather at the Plain of Arafah to pray and seek forgiveness. For Muslims not performing Hajj, fasting on this day expiates sins of the previous and coming year (as per hadith). It is one of the most virtuous days in the Islamic calendar.
6. Eid ul Adha 2026 — 29 May 2026 (10 Dhul Hijjah 1447)
Eid ul Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s ؑ willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah. Muslims perform Qurbani (animal sacrifice) — cow, goat, sheep or camel — and distribute the meat among family, neighbours and the poor. Sacrifice is permitted over three days (10th, 11th, 12th of Dhul Hijjah).
7. Islamic New Year 1448 — 16 June 2026 (1 Muharram 1448)
The Islamic New Year begins with the first day of Muharram. Unlike the Gregorian New Year, it is observed quietly with reflection and gratitude — commemorating the Prophet’s ﷺ migration (Hijrah) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE, which marks the foundation of the Islamic calendar.
8. Ashura — 25 June 2026 (10 Muharram 1448)
Ashura (10th of Muharram) is a day of great significance. Allah saved Prophet Musa (Moses) ؑ from Pharaoh on this day. The Prophet ﷺ fasted on Ashura and encouraged Muslims to do the same. It is recommended to also fast on the 9th or 11th of Muharram alongside the 10th.
9. Eid Milad un Nabi ﷺ — 4 September 2026 (12 Rabi ul Awwal 1448)
The 12th of Rabi ul Awwal marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In Pakistan, this is a public holiday. Processions (Julus), Mawlid gatherings, Naat recitations and illuminations of mosques and homes are held across the country in celebration of the Prophet’s ﷺ birth.
How Islamic Dates are Determined in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the start of each Islamic month is officially determined by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. This committee meets on the 29th of every Islamic month and collects moon-sighting testimonies from cities including Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar and Islamabad. Scientific support is provided by Pakistan Meteorological Department, SUPARCO and the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Because Pakistan determines its moon sighting locally, there is sometimes a 1-day difference between the Pakistani Islamic date and Saudi Arabia’s date — particularly for Ramadan and Eid. The committee’s announcement is broadcast on national television each evening.
In Pakistan, the Islamic day begins at Maghrib (sunset), not midnight. So if the moon is sighted in the evening, the new Islamic date starts right away that night.
Islamic Calendar & Desi Calendar — Pakistan’s Dual System
Pakistan’s Punjab region uniquely uses two traditional calendars alongside the Gregorian calendar:
